Marian University and The Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation Launch Statewide Bone Health Initiative

Marian University and the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF) have announced a partnership to enhance bone health education and osteoporosis awareness throughout Indiana, with a focus on outreach to underserved populations.

Osteoporosis, a silent disease characterized by decreased bone density and increased fracture susceptibility, affects approximately 10 million Americans, with an additional 44 million individuals at elevated risk due to low bone mass. The condition often remains undiagnosed until a fracture occurs, with statistics revealing that one in two women and up to one in four men over the age of 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.

"This collaboration exemplifies Marian University's dedication to enhancing community wellness through accessible education and outreach programs," said Dr. Todd Logan, Scholar-in-Residence for Aging & Society at Marian University. "By aligning with BHOF, we are actively working to address healthcare disparities and equip Hoosiers with essential knowledge and resources to maintain robust skeletal health throughout their lifespan."

The comprehensive initiative will deliver bone health education through community seminars, interactive health fairs, educational workshops, and targeted digital campaigns. These efforts aim to increase public awareness of osteoporosis risk factors, emphasize the importance of early detection, and promote evidence-based preventive strategies essential for lifelong skeletal health.

"Education serves as the cornerstone for improving bone health outcomes across all demographics," said Kathleen Shoemaker, Chair of the BHOF Board of Trustees. "We are delighted to join forces with Marian University in bringing critical information and resources to Indiana residents, particularly those in communities where access to bone health education has traditionally been inadequate."

The partnership will highlight several key preventive measures, including regular bone density screenings, optimal nutritional practices that emphasize calcium and vitamin D intake, and incorporating weight-bearing physical activities as fundamental components of maintaining bone health and managing osteoporosis.
