Marian University’s Katherine Stegemann ’23 is the recipient of one of the most prestigious undergraduate scholarships in natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering in the country. The junior biology major was recently named a Barry Goldwater Scholar, one of only 417 students nationally with only 11 scholars from Indiana.
“I am really honored to have been named a Goldwater Scholar,” Stegemann said. “As a Marian biology major, this scholarship will assist me in my post-graduate studies and empower me to trust my research instincts.” Stegemann plans to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry and work for an industrial research company or lab in the research and development department. By providing scholarships to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering, the Goldwater Foundation is helping ensure the United States is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the nation needs in those critical fields. Katherine’s research mentor, Carina Collins, Ph.D., is immensely proud, saying she was ecstatic to learn of Katherine’s award.
“It has been an honor to watch Katherine develop as a scientist,” Collins said. “Throughout her time working with me in the lab, she has demonstrated an aptitude for problem-solving and a genuine curiosity about the world around her. I cannot wait to see what other amazing things she accomplishes during her time at Marian and beyond!”
“I am really excited and have gained more confidence in my abilities,” Stegemann added. “I’ve had some powerful influences in my life including my family, a supportive mentor in Dr. Collins, and others as I am determined to do well.” Dr. Collins knows she will. “Katherine earned this prestigious award thanks to her persistence, attention to detail, and ultimately a strong work ethic,” Collins added.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served 30 years as a United States senator and more than 50 years as a soldier and statesman. Goldwater Scholars have gone on to win an impressive array of prestigious post-graduate fellowships, among which are the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, Rhodes Scholarship, and more.
Because of the Goldwater award, Katherine receives a two-semester scholarship amount equal to tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
