What are the chances a future physician could also be a singer-songwriter headlining at the Carmel Palladium? That’s a reality for Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Zach DuBois ’22. DuBois, lauded by Country Music Television (CMT), and Billboard Magazine, has already produced three studio albums. It’s what he did after undergraduate graduation from the University of Notre Dame in 2011. Singing and songwriting have been one of his lifelong dreams.

“During my senior year at the University of Notre Dame, I took an entrepreneurship class where I put together a business plan for being a full-time, touring singer-songwriter,” DuBois explained. DuBois describes his music style between that of John Denver and John Mellencamp.

 While taking a break after graduation, DuBois spent seven years based out of Nashville, Tennessee touring full time as a singer-songwriter and hitting the road with artists like the Turnpike Troubadours, the Josh Abbot Band, and Old Dominion. But in the Fall of 2018, DuBois returned to Indiana to begin medical school at the College of Osteopathic Medicine focusing on family medicine. So why is this modern-day future doctor deciding to pivot away from a promising full-time singing career and turn to medicine? Making a difference by healing people and saving lives.

“I could not be more excited for this new season of life as I continue on the journey of fulfilling my lifelong dream of being a medical doctor,” DuBois explained. “I wouldn’t trade any of my life experiences and adventures for the world, but I feel now is the time for me to transfer the majority of my time and energy toward my medical training.”

Angela Wagner DO, MA is the College of Osteopathic Medicine’s assistant professor of family medicine, and one of Zach’s biggest fans. She’s seen his medical school progress from day one. “I am so incredibly proud of his past four years at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, she said. “He has a bright future as a physician, but I can’t hold back my awe and pride of his musical talents he’s continued to foster. “His music is very inspirational!” 

 DuBois says he’s excited about graduation in just a few months, May 2022. Matching for physician residency starts in March, but first things first. DuBois will be in the spotlight headlining at The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana on Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. While DuBois says he’s excited about his starring role at The Palladium, he says music and medicine have something in common.

“The great thing about both medicine and music is that they are lifelong endeavors, and you'll never master either. I foresee the two taking turns playing different roles in my life, during the different seasons of life.”
