Marian University offers first doctorate in the social sciences

by News Release | Nov 20, 2019

FountainMarian University will offer a new Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Organizational Leadership through the Fred S. Klipsch Educators College. Marian will begin accepting applications in early 2020 and the first class, a week-long summer intensive, begins in July. This is a 34 month program that helps students develop their leadership capacity with a particular focus on exercising leadership in complex, rapidly changing social environments in all professional settings.

The program will be delivered in a blended format, meeting on campus and online. Students will also have the opportunity to attend a leadership conference and, for those interested in teaching in higher education, compete for a future faculty fellowship.

“A doctoral program has been a long sought-after request from many of our alumni,” said Kenith Britt, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Dean of the Klipsch Educators College. “By offering this program we are able to provide a unique and powerful process for developing leaders to serve our community and region.”

The vision of the program is to assist individuals on their journey towards ethical and authentic leadership so they can mobilize others to make progress on the most difficult challenges faced in society. “This program is about helping people develop in their ability to exercise leadership,” Jeff Kaufman, Assistant Professor of Leadership, said. “While theory is an important foundation, at the end of the day the goal is to help our students grow as leaders who can influence others within their organization and society at-large.”

“I have participated in a number of management and leadership development programs,” Elizabeth Osika, Ph.D., Assistant Provost for Teaching and Learning at Marian University, said. “But, I haven’t participated in one that truly transformed the way I thought about work and the purpose of leadership until now. Engaging in this model has changed the way I approach my work as an academic leader.”

The Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership (Ed.D.) degree is the fourth doctorate degree offered by Marian University, accompanied by Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Nurse Anesthetist (DNP), and Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP).
