Transportation Around Indianapolis

Driving

  • Many United States citizens have their own cars. If you plan to drive, be sure you follow all U.S. and state laws about driver's licenses, carrying proper automobile insurance, and vehicle registration.

IndyGo public transportation

  • indygoThe IndyGo public transportation system includes 30 bus routes covering downtown and suburban areas, including the airport.
  • The standard fare is $1.75. If two or more buses are needed to reach your destination, consider a one-day pass for $4. Note: Exact change is required when you board the bus! You can use your one-day unlimited times on the day of purchase. You can request this day pass from the driver. Monthly passes, including the College S-Pass, are also available and will save you money if you plan to be a frequent rider.
  • IndyGo bus routes and schedules are online at www.indygo.net. Every route has a printed schedule with a map of the route and timetables.
  • For information about routes, schedules, and fares go to www.indygo.net or call 317.635.3344 Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Taxis and driving services

taxiTaxicabs (called “taxis” or “cabs”) can often be found in front of large hotels and at one of several taxi stands in downtown Indianapolis. But, in most cases, you will phone to arrange taxi service. Fares are approximately $2 per mile, with additional charges for more than one passenger. Contact a taxi company to find current costs. You can also use driving services like Uber and Lyft for transportation in and around Indianapolis.

Bikes

  • bikesMarian University provides a limited number of free bicycles for students to use. You can check them out through the campus Police Department for single-day use.
  • Indianapolis was recognized by Away.com as one of the best cities to see from a bicycle seat in the world! Indianapolis has nearly 64 miles of bike lanes, with many of them on primary roads.
  • The Indiana Pacers BikeShare program is also popular for transportation in around the downtown area. An annual membership costs $80 and day passes are available for $8. The bikeshare program is perfect for riding the eight-mile Indianapolis Cultural Trail and exploring downtown cultural districts, shops, attractions, restaurants, and more.

Megabus

megabusMegabus, a public transportation line that operates in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada, also offers service in the United States. Megabus routes in Indianapolis include trips to most major U.S. cities, including Chicago and New York. Megabus is a cost-effective alternative to Greyhound buses and Amtrak trains. Greyhound bus lines

greyhound When it comes to long-distance travel between most major cities in the United States, Greyhound can be a cost-effective option. Greyhound also operates in Mexico and Canada. To explore service routes or book a trip, go to greyhound.com

Amtrak trains

  • amtrackThe United States train system is Amtrak.
  • The Hoosier State runs four times per week between Indianapolis and Chicago. 
  • Trains are a good option for students and travelers who want to relax and enjoy the scenery.
  • Choose your own adventure as you explore the destinations along the way. Whether you like the energy of vibrant big cities or the gentle calm of small towns, Amtrak offers something for everyone.
