Indiana Important Bird Area
Audubon, as the partner for BirdLife International, is working to identify a network of sites that provide critical habitat for birds. This effort, known as the Important Bird Areas Program (IBA), recognizes that habitat loss and fragmentation are the most serious threats facing populations of birds across America and around the world. The IBA program is a global effort to identify areas that are most important for maintaining bird populations, and focus conservation efforts at protecting these sites. In Indiana, this conservation initiative is based on the campus of Marian College and uses the Marian College EcoLab as a “model” Important Bird Area. As a model, the IBA coordinator for Indiana provides opportunities for the general public to learn about the avifauna of the EcoLab, participate in its environmental restoration, and monitor bird populations. To learn more about the IBA program and sites around the state that have been recognized, please visit www.audubon.org/bird/iba and click on the state of Indiana.
