Her nursing experience lies in critical care and she has held a variety of positions in one of the country’s largest neurological critical care units at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis since 1986, most recently that of Shift Coordinator. She maintains a supplemental staff RN position on this unit still, and is ACLS certified
She received her bachelor of science in nursing from Indiana University in 1986. She received her master of science degree in clinical education from the University of Indianapolis in 2006. Susan Schroeder joined Marian University as assistant professor in August 2007. Professor Schroeder is the course lead for NUB440: The Care of the Complex Patient, the senior level medical-surgical nursing course. She also teaches a critical care elective to a select group of students each spring.
Professor Schroeder was a 2008 Simulation Scholar and has participated in state-wide interprofessional education events on simulation. She continues to take an active role in simulation at the Alan and Sue Leighton School of Nursing. She is currently co-chair of the Progression and Outcome Committee and past chair of Student Events Committee. She is a contributing author of Philosophical Exploration through the Mind, Heart and Soul of Nurses (2008). Her volunteer activities include Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School and The Trinity Free Clinic in Carmel, IN.
