American Foreign Policy and Global Leadership in an Age of Partisan Division: A Three-Part Series

Brian Hook is the founder of Latitude, LLC, an international strategic consulting firm based in Washington, D.C. The firm works with corporations and nonprofits to develop and implement their international strategic plans and help expand their operations into new countries.

During 2012, Mr. Hook served on the Romney campaign as senior advisor on foreign policy. He was the foreign policy director for Governor Tim Pawlenty’s presidential campaign.

In 2008, he was confirmed as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organizations. He oversaw American foreign policy at the United Nations and other international organizations, managing a $3.5 billion budget, six diplomatic missions, and staff of over 300 civil and foreign service officers.

From 2006-08, he served in New York as a senior advisor to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 2006-08. He drafted and negotiated sanctions in the UN Security Council against Iran, North Korea, al-Qaeda, and Sudan/Darfur.

From 2004-06, he worked in the West Wing of the White House as a Special Assistant to the President for Policy in the Chief of Staff’s office. He served at the Department of Justice as Counsel in the Office of Legal Policy from 2003-04 and during this period worked with the 9/11 Commission and its investigation of the September 11 attacks.

He practiced corporate law/mergers and acquisitions at Hogan & Hartson in Washington, DC from 1999-2003. He also served as a legislative advisor to Iowa Governor Terry E. Branstad and U.S. Congressman James A. Leach.

Mr. Hook earned a law degree from the University of Iowa; a master’s degree in philosophy from Boston College; and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Iowa. He serves on the Board of Trustees of St. John’s Seminary in Boston, the Steering Committee of the John Hay Initiative, and the Board of Advisors of the Alexander Hamilton Society.
