On Sunday, November 4, Marian University hosted the 2012 Indianapolis Catholic Youth Conference (ICYC). The ICYC is a joint venture between the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana. Nearly 700 high school students from central Indiana attended the conference. The keynote speaker for the conference was Katie Prejean, a Catholic youth minister and high school teacher from Louisiana. Thanks to her unique blend of humor, interaction and dancing, Prejean has been a featured speaker at numerous regional and national catholic youth conferences. Music at the conference was provided by CEILI RAIN. The group offers an original, innovative blend of pop-rock music with a dash of Celtic/Irish flavor and an uplifting/joyful message. During the afternoon participants many participants took advantage of the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Mark Erdosy, the director of church relations and the San Damiano Scholars Program, said “Seeing nearly 700 high school students excited about their faith was electric! The opportunity to collaborate with both dioceses and the organizing team in planning this event was pretty special. Central and southern Indiana is blessed to have so many dedicated youth ministry professionals who are committed to empowering high school students to live and spread their faith. Plus, seeing a number of our alumni with their youth groups and the impact they are having on high school students was really awe-inspiring. We are definitely interested in hosting this event again in two years, as well as other similar events for high school and college students.” Kay Scoville, director of the office of youth ministry for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis; Evelyn Butler, director of the office of youth ministry for the Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana; and Jackie Vandenburg, administrative coordinator for youth ministry at the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, collaborated with a team of youth ministers from both dioceses in planning the event. Ellice Bedel, the youth minister at St. Susanna Catholic Church in Plainfield, Indiana, coordinated volunteers for the event. Marian University alumni figured prominently in planning the event. Annie Wolfley ’07, youth minister at St. Malachy in Brownsburg, Indiana, was a key member on the core planning team. She also coordinated the opening skit with the Archdiocesan Youth Council (AYC) members. Megan Gehrich ’12, along with two current Marian University students, led a workshop on “Living Faith after High School.” Michael O’Connell ’10 co-lead a workshop with Paul Sifuentes entitled, “Youcat.” Michael is the youth minister at Holy Spirit at Geist, in Fishers, Indiana. Meredith Riley ’11, music teacher at St. Roch Parish, was the keyboardist for the closing liturgy. A number of current Marian University students gave up part of their Sunday to volunteer at ICYC.
