Marian University Medical Student Elected to National Osteopathic Position

by Katie Bradley | May 12, 2015

The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) has elected Maureen McAteer, second-year medical student at Marian University, to serve as national secretary to the 2015-16 Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents.

McAteer served as president of the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) Student Government Association, where she represented MU-COM students to the university’s administration, faculty, and external groups from August 2013-January 2015. In January she became President of the MUCOM Student Government Clinical Council.

McAteer will serve alongside 12 executive student leaders in COSGP, which is the student governing board to the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). The group aims to enact change in graduate medical education, advocate for federal policy improvement, and strengthen the osteopathic profession by empowering the national osteopathic student population to be student leaders.

“This is an incredible honor to be elected to this board and even more so to be a student from the inaugural class of a new institution,” said Joseph Graham, second-year medical student at Marian University and vice president of the Student Government Association Clinical Council.  “We are incredibly proud of Maureen and look forward to the great work this student group will do to improve osteopathic medicine in the coming year.”

For the second year, McAteer has also been honored with the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Leadership, an award given to four outstanding student leaders across campus. She is the only graduate student to ever receive the award and the only student to receive it two consecutive years.

“She is a terrific model and spokesperson, representing our Catholic Franciscan values and servant leadership,” said Ruth Rodgers, dean of students and vice president for student success and engagement.
