Medical Students Visit IPS Afterschool Program to Teach Kids about Science

by Katie Bradley | Apr 23, 2015

Students and faculty from the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) visited local Indianapolis Public School, Thomas D. Gregg School 15 for their afterschool program to get kids excited about science.

The eight medical students and two faculty members set up fun and interactive experiments to help kids learn the scientific method and general science concepts. Among the demonstrations, kids watched the freezing and breaking apart of different items, including flowers and a penny, with liquid nitrogen. The group also did a density experiment where they layered water, syrup, and vegetable oil in glass tube and predicted where different items would settle based on its density.

The event served as the MU-COM Research Club’s science community service project.

“The research club would like to make this our annual service project and perform this multiple times a year with students and faculty,” said Emma Hegwood, second-year medical student.  “I truly feel like this sparked interest and excitement for the students. It gave them a different atmosphere to learn and be curious, which is everything we want in young minds.”

With more than 30 student organizations, Marian University medical students have a variety of opportunities to volunteer, support the profession, and promote wellness on campus and in the local communities. Student club members attend national conferences, volunteer at a variety of events throughout the city and state, organize blood drives, visit local schools to promote wellness, and much more. If there’s not a club that fits your interest you can also work with the Office of Student Affairs to create a new student organization.

If you are interested in starting your own organization or to learn more about existing opportunities please contact Kaylee Hofmeister, student affairs specialist, at khofmeister@marian.edu or at 317-955-6612 or by visiting Evans Center Suite 109.
