Marian University Named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

by Katie Bradley | Nov 12, 2014

Marian University was one of 98 colleges and universities nationally – and one of only two in the state – to be named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. From Alternative Spring Break service trips, to San Damiano Scholars service projects, to weekly service through the Students Taking Active Reflective Roles (STARR), Marian University is dedicated to the community.

In 2011, President Barack Obama challenged all university and college presidents to develop and expand programs in interfaith/community service. To date, more than 500 schools have responded to the challenge.

“The Marian University community—students, faculty and staff—do not perform hours of service to be recognized for community engagement.  However, we are very proud and happy to be among the two institutions in Indiana honored for leadership in developing programs in interfaith/community service and we are committed to continuing community service,” said Sr. Norma Rocklage, Ph.D. ’60, executive director of education formation outreach.

Manchester University was the only other Indiana school awarded. Other universities recognized included: Duke University, Kent State University, United States Air Force Academy, and Stanford University.

“There’s no greater satisfaction than service to others,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. “I am delighted to see that many young people, despite their religious beliefs and backgrounds, have pledged to work together to help solve some of their communities’ challenges.”

News of the award came to the university from the U.S. Department of Education and Corporation for National and Community Service.
