Field Research on Display in Marian University Art Gallery, November 10-December 4

by Jenny Ambroise, assistant professor of art and art history | Nov 12, 2014

Field Research features the painting of Nancy Nichols-Pethick and will be on display in the Marian University Art Gallery from November 10 through December 4, 2014. An opening reception will be held November 13 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Nichols-Pethick grew up in rural Maine, and the nature that surrounded her there continues to influence her current work and the sense of her paintings being haunted.  She writes, “When I am painting a painting – any painting, no matter the subject, though I am invariably drawn to the natural world – I am waiting for it to become haunted.  Sometimes paintings are haunted by their past selves (the ghosts of paintings that lie beneath the visible painting, lending their textures and shapes, the paths followed and the steps retraced) and sometimes they are haunted by everything that they suggest – their poignant absent presences.”

Nancy Nichols-Pethick is an associate professor in the department of art at Indiana State University. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including a University Arts Endowment Grant to create a series of paintings, The history of an American City.  She recently exhibited her work in the group show Borders: A Regional Survey at the Swope Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The Marian University Art Gallery is located on the west end of the second floor of Marian Hall. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, although appointments at later times are welcome.  Please contact Gallery Director Jenny Ambroise at jambroise@marian.edu with any inquiries.
