Pushing Pixels: A Look Inside Video Game Art

Marian University will host, “Pushing Pixels: A Look Inside Video Art,” an art exhibit featuring the video game art and design of Jason Harlow. The exhibit will be held in Fisher Hall’s art gallery October 8 through November 2, 2012, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 11 from 4-6 p.m.   Harlow discovered video games on the Atari 2600 and said he was captivated with the idea of creating imagery based on fantasy. He earned his master of fine arts degree in computer art from Savannah College of Art and Design, and has worked in the video game industry for the last 10 years as a 3D generalist and lead artist on more than 25 games. Harlow’s work includes projects for MTV, Game Boy Advance, Xbox, and PlayStation. Currently, he is lead 3D artist at Nickelodeon working on Monkey Quest, a browser-based massively multiplayer online game.   “I believe that in video games, art serves design—that is—the purpose of art in games is to envision worlds, creatures, and characters that support the goals of the game. To that end, I strive to work as efficiently as possible while still pushing the boundaries of what makes good video game art,” Harlow said.
