“Pieces of the City” is a collaborative project between Professor Dave Shumate’s writing class and Professor Bill Foley’s Art 255 and Art 355 photography classes. The project’s inspiration came from the Walker Evans/James Agee project in 1936 in which the two were assigned by Fortune magazine to do a story that would document, in words and pictures, the lives of white tenant farmers in rural Alabama. The Marian University students whose works are featured are Isaiah Newkirk, Jonathon K. Ciani, Kelsey Granlund, Daniel Lassell, Danielle Mumma, Aaron M. Wilder, Anna Allen Kat Doherty, and David Leszynski. As the students discussed this project, they started to look at how Indianapolis could be transformed into a body of work by words and photographs. The show will be in the library through the summer of 2010. The library is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Foley’s series on the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacres earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1983, an award regarded as the highest national honor in print journalist, literary achievements, and musical composition. Shumate is the author of The Floating Bridge and High Water Mark, winner of the 2003 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize and named one of the 2004 Best Books of Indiana, poetry category.
