Meet Eliza Gordner, J.D. , and this issue’s featured adjunct faculty member. Gordner has taught BUS 301, Business Law and BUS 358, Law in the Modern Workplace in Marian’s Adult Programs since 2008. How does one go from practicing law to teaching law? When asked this, Gordner replied, "I have always wanted to teach in some capacity. My undergraduate degree is in secondary English education, and I taught high school English for two years. After attending law school and practicing for five years, I realized that I didn’t enjoy working in a billable hour environment, but I still loved learning about the law and educating others." Teaching in MAP afforded her that opportunity. According to Lesley Neff, director of educational services in Marian’s Adult Programs, Gordner has played a huge role in course development in the paralegal studies degree recently introduced in MAP, and will be teaching LAW 100, Introduction to the Paralegal Profession when it debuts in Term 2, as well as future courses in the paralegal program.
Gordner, who also teaches online courses at another institution, said she prefers classroom teaching over online instructing, but admits both have advantages. Gordner said she "truly enjoys teaching adult learners who are really engaged and who want to learn the material to better themselves, both personally and professionally." However, she sees online instruction continuing to expand because it provides so much flexibility to adult students. "I can also see blended programs that offer some sort of face-to-face interaction in addition to online courses, to be the ideal opportunity," Gordner commented.
A native Hoosier, born in southern Indiana, Gordner is herself a student again, working on her Ph.D.. She and her husband live in Indianapolis, where they enjoy spending time with family and friends and their two dogs. Gordner also loves traveling, reading, cooking, and the theatre.
