Marian University Cycling Team Awarded 'Club of the Year'

by Michael Kubancsek | Dec 17, 2014

USA Cycling bestows honor to Indianapolis team for fourth time in six years

For the second consecutive year and fourth time since 2009, USA Cycling has named Marian University Cycling Team “Collegiate Club of the Year.”

The first year for a separate specific collegiate varsity team award, Marian University Cycling was selected for the award based on the team’s year-round commitment to high-level race performance, rider development at all levels, and community engagement. The team was also awarded this distinction in 2009, 2011, and 2013.

“We couldn't be more proud of our cycling team,” said Steve Downing, Director of Athletics. “The level of success that these student-riders have achieved is great for Marian University. Congratulations to all of the riders and Coach Dean Peterson on being the top program in the nation.”

With nearly 60 riders on the roster, with 28 states and four different countries represented, USA Cycling classifies the cycling squad at Marian University as a varsity team. The award takes into account the team’s membership composition, as well as race performance, events and clinics hosted, and club activities.

“The process of collecting and submitting the information required to apply for this award is one of the best ways we have to reflect on the past year and project our goals for the future,” commented Coach Peterson, who has been at the helm of the cycling program since 2006. “This is one way to celebrate the true nature of ‘team’ and a group of people working together, holistically, beyond competition.”

“It's no wonder the school boasts a powerhouse cycling program,” reads USA Cycling’s press release on the Club of the Year awards. “Marian University continues to attract some of the top names in cycling.”

Since 1992, the team has raced to 27 National Championships in the track, road, cyclocross, and BMX disciplines. Founded as a result of the nearby Major Taylor Velodrome, which is now operated by the school in a partnership with the City of Indianapolis, the team has had success in many areas, including graduating student-athletes with meaningful degrees to make an impact on their communities.

“The scholar-athletes that institutions like Marian attract are individuals who want to become leaders in their professional careers and personal lives,” said Daniel J. Elsener, President of Marian University. “These student-athletes can have a profoundly positive impact on society.”
