Marian University Participates in Tree Planting Initiative

by Katie Bradley | Apr 15, 2015

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) collaborated with Marian University and other central Indiana colleges and universities for a tree-planting initiative to commemorate Indiana’s seventh hosting of the Men’s Final Four.

Marian University received four tulip trees for planting on campus. The planting began in front of Clare Hall on Thursday, April 2. Stephanie Schuck, restoration ecologist at the Marian University Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab, led the planting on campus, choosing locations where the beauty of the trees would be seen by many and add to the beauty of the campus.

Tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera) are the state tree of Indiana and are a beautiful native species that provides valuable food and shelter for native wildlife.

The NCAA, Indiana Host Committee, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, and the IUPUI Office of Sustainability partnered to plant a total 26 trees at seven higher education and neighborhood community facilities in the greater Indianapolis area during the week of the 2015 NCAA Men’s Final Four. Other universities included Butler University, Franklin College, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, University of Indianapolis, and Ivy Tech State College.
