Student Newspaper Earns State Awards for Writing and Design

by Katie Bradley | Apr 16, 2014

The Phoenix, Marian University’s student-run newspaper, earned three awards at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association Conference on Saturday, April 5.

Designed by seniors Michael Schrader and Katie McConnell, the paper earned first place for “Best Front Page.” McConnell also received third place for “Best Feature News Story,” and McConnell and sophomore Jenny Marvel won third place for “Best Feature Page.”

“Working for The Phoenix was one of the most challenging things I've done at Marian University, but it was also one of the most rewarding. I was given the opportunity to work as an editor, write stories, design a publication, learn photography, and most importantly, develop leadership skills. With writing and graphic design samples from The Phoenix, I was able to get internships and jobs,” said senior Katie McConnell.

All three awards were for the October 2013 issue of The Phoenix.

“Students who work on The Phoenix learn about each aspect of producing a newspaper, and they’re in charge of it all: from generating ideas to printing and distribution. Watching Katie McConnell and her staff take ownership of the process has been exciting, and we hope to keep building on their hard work,” said Sarah Layden, advisor to The Phoenix and instructor of newspaper writing courses at Marian University.
