Become a Better Writer

by Nancy Crosby | May 02, 2013

In a recent post to MAP’s Facebook page, there was a link to an interesting article about becoming a better writer. Did you happen to check it out? In case you didn't, we've included it now. Dave Kerpen, a New York Times best-selling author and keynote speaker, in his book, Want to be Taken Seriously? Become a Better Writer, says, “Writing is a lost art!” (2013). Kerpen further says, “Your writing is a reflection of your thinking. If you want to be thought of as a smart thinker, you must become a better writer.” (2013). In his February 21, 2013, article on LinkedIN (2013), Kerpen lists five ways he believes you can become a better writer:

  • Practice, practice, practice. The best way to get better at anything is to do it repeatedly.
  • Say it out loud. Hear your writing the way others will “hear” it.
  • Make it more concise. Less is often more.
  • Work on your headlines. Whether it’s the headline of a blog post or the subject line on an email, the headline is 50 percent of your writing.
  • Read. Besides practice writing, Kerpen claims the best way to become a better writer is to become a better reader.

If you have not yet taken MAP English courses, don’t put it off. Becoming a better writer will pay off in every other course you will take. Look for ENG 101 English Composition and ENG 239 Professional Writing on the MAP schedule. Talk to your advisor and think about signing up today.
