If you intend to pursue a career in medicine, it's important that you establish a solid foundation when it comes to hard skills and a knowledge of sciences as they apply to the human body.

Marian University's pre-medicine program includes coursework that prepares you for your next big step in the field of medicine: Scoring well on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and being accepted by a top medical school.

Be strategic when choosing your major.

Medical schools expect that applicants have specific academic and experiential competencies from their undergraduate coursework, particularly in the chemical, life, and physical sciences.

In addition, they expect you’ll have the strong reasoning, analytical, and communication skills that typically come from a general education curriculum that’s grounded in the liberal arts.

Most pre-med students major in biology or chemistry to complete the prerequisite coursework required for admission to medical schools. At Marian, however, our pre-med program allows most students to also major in a liberal arts field such as communication, English, or political science, among others.

Your advisor will help you select a major that not only interests you, but will enable you to develop strong skills in areas that are important for scoring well on the MCAT.

What types of pre-med classes will you take?

Our pre-medicine curriculum includes a range of prerequisite classes that will prepare you for rigorous studies as a medical student.

• Organic chemistry
• Biochemistry
• Physics
• Biology
• Psychology
• Sociology
• Statistics/calculus

Marian’s general education curriculum includes broader courses that will prepare you to to have foundational intellectual skills in communication, quantitative reasoning, behavioral and social knowledge, the arts, and ethics, among other areas.

Having skills in these areas is important for physicians who treat and work with patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds. They also strengthen and enhance your critical competencies in areas that will have a direct impact on your future in the medical profession.
