RICHMOND, Indiana - The Marian College women's tennis team traveled to Earlham College on Tuesday afternoon and cruised to an 8-1 win on the strength of a sweep of the singles matches.
Along with the team victory, senior Michele Sizemore (New Albany, Indiana/New Albany) and defending MCC champion Alyson O'Conner (Lebanon, Indiana/Lebanon) set a new single-season record for singles victories. Both players won their 16th match of the season snapping the record set by Sizemore last season.
Sizemore won her match at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-3, while O'Conner picked up the win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (10-5). O'Conner is 16-2 on the season while Sizemore is 16-5.
The duo also hooked up at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win.
Sophomore Dana Reynolds (Lebanon, Indiana/Lebanon) led the Knights as she picked up a straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. She also teamed with sophomore Alyssa Richard (Madison, Indiana/Shawe Memorial) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-1 win.
Richard also picked up a victory at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Freshman Maria Berry (Madison, Indiana/Shawe Memorial) earned a straight-sets victory at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Berry teamed with freshman Samantha Jo Crump (Indianapolis/Scecina) and fell at No. 2 doubles, 1-8.
Crump did pick up the win at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-3, to improve to 5-1 on the season.
The Knights head to Cedarville, Ohio, on Friday. The match is slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
