Knights pull out third-place finish - 4/19/2009

 
INDIANAPOLIS - Playing right in its own backyard, the Marian College women's golf team shook off a troublesome first day to come back for a third-place finish at the Battle at the Brickyard on Saturday and Sunday.
 
The Knights posted a 343 on day one and that put them in a tie for last place. However, on the rainy day of the weekend, the Knights posted a 328 to move into third place at the end of the two-day event.
 
Junior Angela Gauck (Greensburg, Indiana/North Decatur) pulled out a sixth-place finish after she carded a 156 (82-74), which was just six strokes off the winner.
 
Junior Kristen Welker (Kokomo, Indiana/Western) finished in a tie for 15th place after she shot a 168 (82-86), while sophomore Alyssa Simpson (Crawfordsville, Indiana/North Putnam) pulled out a tie for 22nd after she shot a 173 (87-86).
 
Sophomore Lauren Nickoson (Cleves, Ohio/Taylor HS) came into the clubhouse in a tie for 25th place after she carded a 174 (92-82). Junior Ashley Reed (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) pulled out a 34th-place finish after she shot a 184 (95-89).
 
Playing as an individual, sophomore Cassie Freestone (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) carded a 174 (85-89) to earn her a tie for 25th. Junior Karli Shepherd (Carmel, Indiana/Carmel) finished tied for 31st after she shot a 179 (90-89) and junior Krista Moore (Camby, Indiana/Decatur Central) also competed as an individual for the Knights.
 
The Knights head to the NAIA Unaffiliated Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee on April 27 and 28.
