INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College softball team looked to continue its run of success when Goshen College came to town on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights won their third and fourth straight games in a Mid-Central College Conference twinbill, 9-1 in six innings and 3-2. They improved to 25-7 overall and 8-2 in MCC play.

In what looked to be a pitcher's duel, the Knights were only able to muster an unearned run in the bottom of the first on an RBI-sacrifice fly by sophomore Chelsea Bell (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) to take an early 1-0 lead. Although they had a 1-0 lead, the Knights did not register a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Goshen was also stymied at the plate as senior Heather Pieper (Greenwood, Indiana/Greenwood) confounded the Goshen hitters. Although she did surrender a run in the sixth, she earned a complete game, five-hit victory and struck out eight. The win was her 13th of the season.

Offensively, the Knights were able to add one more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-fielder's choice by Bell to stake Pieper a 2-0 lead. The Maple Leafs scored in the top of the sixth, but Pieper worked out of the jam with a 2-1 lead.

The Knights blew the game wide open in the sixth as they scored seven runs to invoke the eight-run rule. An RBI-single by junior Angie Such (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg), a two-run triple by freshman Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Indiana/Forest Park) started the scoring.

An RBI-single by sophomore Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) was followed by an RBI-double by Bell and an RBI-single by senior Amanda Teagardin (Indianapolis/Southport). Freshman Brittany Camp (Kokomo, Indiana/Kokomo) finished the game with an  bases loaded-walk to take the 9-1 win in six innings.

Uebelhor went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Slayton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Bell led the Knights with three RBI.

In game two, the offense was slightly off as well. The Knights scored the opening run on a solo home run by sophomore Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Indiana/Anderson). Her 10th homer of the season put the Knights up 1-0 after two innings.

Goshen put a scare in the Knights as the Maple Leafs scored a pair in the top of the fourth, but the Knights tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom half on a bases-loaded walk by Such.

After allowing the two runs, junior Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County), the reigning MCC Pitcher of the Week, really settled down as she struck out eight of the final nine batters en route to the complete game win. She allowed two runs on two hits and struck out a season-high 17 batters to improve to 8-0.

The Knights walked away with the victory after a single by senior Samantha Hypes (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) and a walk to Ortwein put two runners on base with one out. Teagardin finished the game with an RBI-single to left center field to give the Knights the 3-2 victory.

Hypes finished 2-for-3 with a run scored while Slayton, Ortwein, Teagardin, junior Melissa Coutz (Indianapolis/Bishop Chatard), and Uebelhor each had a hit.

Sunday's doubleheader at Calumet College of Saint Joseph has been cancelled so the Knights will remain home for an MCC twinbill on Tuesday afternoon. Grace College comes to Indianapolis for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
