SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Indiana - The Marian College softball team traveled to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Wednesday afternoon and picked up a split by winning 6-5 in game one and falling 2-0 in game two.
The Knights' record now sits at 21-7 overall.
The Knights opened the scoring in game one as sophomore Chelsea Bell (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) ripped an RBI-double in the top of the third to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
They added another run in the fourth on an RBI-single by freshman Brittany Camp (Kokomo, Indiana/Kokomo) to take a 2-0 lead.
SMWC took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth on four unearned runs, but the Knights answered in the top of the sixth with four of their own to take a 6-4 lead.
An RBI-fielder's choice by freshman Jillian Ayres (Columbus, Indiana/North) opened the scoring, while a two-run double by freshman Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Indiana/Forest Park) and an RBI-double by sophomore Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) capped the four-run inning.
The Pomeroys made it interesting with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but senior Heather Pieper (Greenwood, Indiana/Greenwood) slammed the door for her 11th victory of the season.
Camp went 3-for-4 to lead the Knights while Uebelhor finished 1-for-1 with two RBI. Bell also added two hits.
Game two was more of a pitcher's duel as neither team could score through the first six-and-a-half innings. The Knights left two on in the first, one on in the third, one on in the fourth and sixth, and two on in the top of the seventh. They were unable to bring any runners across the plate and SMWC earned the 2-0 win on a walk-off two-run home run.
Bell and junior Chelsea Young (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) each had two hits and combined for four of the Knights' six hits.
The Knights head to the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Thursday for a Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
