Knights split at Hanover - 3/30/2009

HANOVER, Indiana - The Marian College softball team earned a split on the road at Hanover College on Monday afternoon. The Knights dominated game one, 10-2 in six innings, but fell in game two, 4-3, to the Panthers.

The split moves the Knights to 20-6 on the season. Since a 7-4 start the Knights have gone 13-2 in their last 15 games.

Hanover took the lead in the bottom of the third inning of game one, but the Knights' bats came alive in the fourth.

Sophomore Chelsea Bell (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) ripped her first career home run to lead off the inning and tied the score, 1-1. Junior Melissa Coutz (Indianapolis/Bishop Chatard) hit an RBI-single and junior Angie Such (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) hit a two-run double to give the Knights the 4-1 lead.

They added four more in the fifth when senior Amanda Teagardin (Indianapolis/Southport) hit a three-run home run to push the lead to 7-1. Coutz scored on an error to give the Knights an 8-1 lead.

They finished it off in the top of the sixth when senior Samantha Hypes (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) hit a two-run blast to give the Knights a nine-run lead, 10-1. The Panthers added a run, but the Knights had done enough to earn the 10-2 win.

Junior Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) threw five innings, allowed just one run, scattered six hits, and struck out six to improve to 6-0 on the season. Junior Chelsea Gladden (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) closed the game in the sixth in her first action of the season.

Bell finished game one 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Teagardin went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Coutz and sophomore Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Indiana/Anderson) each added two hits for the Knights.

However, game two saw a few mistakes lead to a 4-3 defeat. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead after an error opened the bottom of the second inning and led to a two-run double to stake Hanover the lead.

The Knights got one back in the top of the third as Teagardin knocked home freshman Brittany Camp (Kokomo, Indiana/Kokomo) to cut the gap to 2-1.

Two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead, but the Knights clawed back in the top of the fifth.

An RBI-double off the bat of Teagardin cut the lead to 4-2 and the Knights added another in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by junior Chelsea Young (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg). The lead was down to one, 4-3, but the Knights went quietly the rest of the way to allow Hanover the victory.

Young finished game two 2-for-3 with an RBI while Teagardin went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Freshman Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Indiana/Forest Park) added two hits for the Knights.

The Knights head to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Wednesday for a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. The Knights swept SMWC on March 21, 8-0 and 8-3.
