Pair of streaks snapped in split - 3/30/2009

MISHAWAKA, Indiana - The Marian College softball team split with the No. 9-ranked Bethel College Pilots on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Knights had their 11-game winning streak snapped in game one, 9-0, but snapped Bethel's 35-game MCC winning streak, 4-1, in game two.

The Knights are 19-5 on the season and are 4-2 in conference play.

The Knights were limited to just two hits in game one as they fell to the Pilots, 9-0, in five innings.

However, game two went to the Knights, 4-1, behind stellar pitching and timely hitting.

The Knights posted one in the top of the first on an RBI-double by sophomore Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Indiana/Anderson) to take a 1-0 lead. They added another run in the top of the second on an RBI-single by sophomore Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) for a 2-0 lead.

They posted two more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead on an RBI-ground out by junior Melissa Coutz (Indianapolis/Bishop Chatard) and an RBI-single by freshman Brittany Camp (Kokomo, Indiana/Kokomo) to take a 4-0 lead.

That was all junior Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) needed as she picked up the complete game victory, allowed just one earned run, scattered four hits, and struck out three to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Slayton went 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI to lead the Knights. Camp also went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while senior Amanda Teagardin (Indianapolis/Southport) added two hits for the Knights.

The team travels to Hanover College for a doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
