INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College softball team made history on Saturday afternoon as they christened the new Marian College Softball Field with a twinbill against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

The Knights utilized the long ball in game one as they defeated the Pomeroys, 8-0 in five innings, and used timely hitting in an 8-3 game two victory. The Knights are now 12-4 on the season and have won five straight contests.

Senior Samantha Hypes (Plainfield, Indiana/Plainfield) knocked home the first-ever run on the new field with an RBI-single, and sophomore Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Indiana/Anderson) hit a a two-run blast that cleared the new scoreboard in left center to give the Knights a 3-0 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Knights added the five runs they needed to invoke the mercy rule. Sophomore Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) ripped an RBI-double and sophomore Chelsea Bell (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) followed with an RBI-double to take a 5-0 lead.

Ortwein finished off the scoring with a three-run bomb to secure the 8-0 lead for senior and reigning MCC Pitcher of the Week Heather Pieper (Greenwood, Indiana/Greenwood).

The Knights tied the game on an RBI-double by Hypes in the third inning and broke the game open with a three-run fifth to take a 5-2 lead. A three-run double by Slayton capped the rally and put the Knights in front.

The Pomeroys scored one in the top of the sixth, but the Knights immediately answered to put the game away.
