Five Knights named All-Conference - 4/30/2009

 
INDIANAPOLIS - The MCC Tournament champion Marian College softball team had five of its players honored as All-Conference selections, the conference announced on Thursday.
 
In addition, Marian College softball head coach Scott Fleming was named Mid-Central College Conference Coach of the Year after he led the Knights to a 33-7 regular season, his first MCC Tournament title, and an undefeated 12-0 mark at home in a new stadium this season. The honor is the first in his six-year career.
 
Senior Heather Pieper (Greenwood, Indiana/Greenwood) earned her second All-Conference nod after she had a career year in the circle. She finished as the runner-up for MCC Pitcher of the Year after a 17-3 regular season that featured 16 complete games, four shutouts, and an 11.9-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Pieper was named All-MCC for the second straight season.

Sophomore Mallory Ortwein (Anderson, Indiana/Anderson) was also named to the All-Conference team after a stellar second season. Ortwein was the runner-up in the MCC Player of the Year voting after she finished the regular season with a .390 batting average, 41 hits, eight doubles, as well as a team- and conference-high 12 home runs. She drove in a team-high 41 runs in the regular season and finished with an .810 slugging percentage. The honor is Ortwein's second straight after a strong freshman campaign in 2007-08.

Junior Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) picked up her second All-Conference honor after an unbeaten season in the circle. Corum went 12-0 on the regular season with a 0.84 earned run average in 92 innings. She had nine complete games, four shutouts, and a team-high 119 strikeouts. She also tied for the fourth-best single-game performance in NAIA history when she had 17 strikeouts in a 3-2 win over Goshen College on April 4. She was also an All-MCC selection as a freshman.

Sophomore Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) was also named to the All-Conference team for the second straight season. Slayton was the team leader in hits with 49, for the second straight year, and batted .377 for the regular season. She also had a team-high 12 doubles and drove in 22 runs. Slayton had a strong season in conference play as she batted .385 in MCC games and tied for the team lead with 20 hits, including six doubles.

Freshman Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Indiana/Forest Park) picked up her first All-Conference nod after an unbelievable rookie campaign in conference play. She finished the regular season with a .363 batting average and had 33 hits, including four triples. However, it was her performance in MCC play that pushed her over the top. In all 16 games, she batted .488 with 20 hits in 41 at-bats, had two doubles, two triples, and drove in seven runs. She tied for the team-lead in hits in MCC play.

The Knights won their second-ever MCC Tournament title on Thursday after they defeated No. 7-ranked Bethel College, 14-6, in five innings. They will battle the Pilots in a doubleheader on Friday, with a single game on Saturday if necessary, for the right to go to the NAIA National Tournament. The games will be played in Mishawaka, Indiana, beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday.
