KNIGHTS WIN TOURNAMENT TITLE - 4/30/2009

MARION, Indiana - The Marian College softball team won its second Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship on Thursday afternoon in a rain-shortened tournament at Indiana Wesleyan University.
 
The Knights defeated No. 7-ranked Bethel College, 14-6 in five innings, to improve to 36-7 on the season.
 
After enduring a morning filled with inclement weather, the two teams finally took the field at 3:30 p.m., and got right to it.
 
Bethel opened the scoring in the top of the first with a single run, but the Knights answered with four in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. The Pilots responded in the third with two runs to make the score, 4-3, but the Knights scored five more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-3 lead.
 
Once again, the Pilots answered with three in the top of the fourth to cut the gap to 9-6, but the Knights were far from done.
 
They posted four more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 13-6 lead and senior Heather Pieper (Greenwood, Indiana/Greenwood) shut the door on the Pilots in the top of the fifth.
 
Junior Melissa Coutz (Indianapolis/Bishop Chatard) hit a towering solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 14-6 victory and earn the Knights their second MCC Tournament title.
 
Junior Sandy Corum (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) threw four innings, allowed six runs on 10 hits, and earned the win to improve to 13-0 on the season.
 
Sophomore Chelsea Bell (Indianapolis/Franklin Central) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored to lead the Knights.
 
Sophomore Jessica Slayton (Indianapolis/Decatur Central) went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while freshmen Brittany Camp (Kokomo, Indiana/Kokomo) and Kelsey Uebelhor (St. Anthony, Indiana/Forest Park) each went 3-for-3 for the Knights.
 
Juniors Angie Such (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) and Chelsea Young (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) each went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Coutz finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Coutz and Young each hit their third home run of the season.
 
The Knights now head to Mishawaka, Indiana, on Friday to battle the Pilots in a three-game series for the MCC automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The series starts with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Friday and the third game will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday if necessary.
