Blue defeats Gold in Spring Game - 4/25/2009

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College football team closed its 2009 spring season with their annual spring game, and, with it under the lights, the crowd of more than 800 was highly entertained.

After the White team opened the scoring with a fumble return by freshman Reece Green (Greenfield, Indiana/Greenfield) for a touchdown, the Blue team's defense shut down the potent White team's offense and seized control of the game.

The White team opened its score line with a short field goal on the stroke of halftime, and that was just the beginning.

Sophomore quarterback Clay Coomer (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) hooked up with sophomore John Pfifer (Greenwood, Indiana/Greenwood) to give the Blue team a 10-7 lead.

After a White team turnover on the ensuing kickoff, the Blue team drove down the field and freshman quarterback Josh Carpenter (Indianapolis/Pike) hooked up with sophomore Jeff McClure (Brownsburg, Indiana/Brownsburg) with a lob to the corner of the end zone. McClure made an acrobatic catch to seal the 17-7 victory for the Blue team.

The evening opened with a dinner honoring the 40th anniversary of the Indianapolis Capitols and the crowd that hung around for the spring game was extraordinary. The fans rose and fell with every play and St.Vincent Health Field, our new home, was put on display.

Head coach Ted Karras Jr. and the Knights take the field on Thursday, August 27 in Joliet, Illinois against the University of St. Francis (IL) Fighting Saints in an MSFA Crossover game. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. (EDT).
