Knights suffer home sweep to Cougars - 4/16/2009

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College baseball team, after a couple of rainouts, hosted No. 25-ranked Spring Arbor University on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars bested the Knights in game one, 6-0, and got a comeback win in game two, 2-1, to pick up the sweep.

The Knights fell to 19-21 on the season and 8-10 in Mid-Central College Conference play.

Freshman lefthander Ben Walters (Beech Grove, Indiana/Beech Grove) looked like a seasoned veteran in game one as he shut down a potent Spring Arbor offense. While he got in jams along the way, he worked out of them through the first three innings. However, a key error allowed the first unearned run to cross in the top of the fourth.

After getting through another jam in the fifth, Walters looked as if he was going to cruise through the sixth as he struck out the first batter of the inning. An error allowed a Cougar to reach base, but a ground out put one man on with two outs.

However, a two-run single, and a trio of RBI-singles allowed five unearned runs to score to give Spring Arbor a 6-0 lead. On a day when the pitching reigned supreme, the Knights could muster just two hits in game one and fell 6-0.

Walters went the distance for his fourth career complete game, scattered 10 hits, and allowed zero earned runs. He struck out two and walked two in defeat to fall to 2-3 on the season.

Game two was absolutely nothing different. Junior lefthander Ricky Parrish (Avon, Indiana/Avon) had everything working through the first five innings. A bases loaded walk to sophomore Cory Emmons (Indianapolis/Lutheran) gave Parrish a 1-0 lead.

However, in the sixth, the Cougars brought two home on an two-run double to take a 2-1 lead and that was all they needed to pick up the sweep.

Parrish threw his sixth complete game of the season, allowed just seven hits, two earned runs, and struck out five. He fell to 4-5 on the season.

Senior Chad Morris (Whitestown, Indiana/Vermont) led the way after he went 2-for-4.

The Knights remain at home on Friday when they take on Taylor University at Marian College Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m., and the game can be heard LIVE at www.marian.edu/athletics.
