Knights split season series with Bethel - 4/11/2009

INDIANAPOLIS - After salvaging a split on the road, the Marian College baseball team split its home doubleheader with Bethel College on Saturday by winnin game one, 5-4, and dropping game two, 6-3.

The Knights remain at .500 with a 19-19 overall record and an 8-8 mark in MCC play.

After being no-hit for the first three innings and falling behind 4-0, the Knights got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI-single by senior Kyle Cox (Indianapolis/Butler) and an RBI-sacrifice fly by freshman Jared Mills (Cicero, Indiana/Hamilton Heights) cut the gap to two, 4-2.

Neither team was able to score in the fifth, but the Knights tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with the pair of unearned runs. After junior Patrick Midla (Brownsburg, Indiana/Bethesda Christian) shut down Bethel in the seventh for the complete game, the Knights had to pull off a dramatic win. They did just that.

Sophomore Todd Ungru (Madison, Indiana/Shawe Memorial) hit an RBI-single with two on base and one out to earn the 5-4 win and ensure the series split.

Midla improved to 4-2 on the season after he allowed just two earned runs.

Freshman Evan Schludecker (Indianapolis/Roncalli), Ungru, and Cox each had two hits for the Knights.

Game two saw the Knights get up early on an RBI-ground out by Ungru to take a 1-0 lead after one inning. Junior Tony Goodpaster (Avon, Indiana/Wabash) threw five innings of shutout ball and the Knights took a 2-0 lead on an RBI-single by Ungru.

The Pilots got to Goodpaster in the sixth after they scored two runs to tie the game. However, the Knights answered with a run off an RBI-single by sophomore Bobby Willis (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) to stake Goodpaster a 3-2 lead heading into the final inning.

The Pilots scored four in the top of the seventh to earn the 6-3 win and salvage a road split.

Morris and Mills each had two hits while freshman Jon Wade (Avon, Indiana/Avon) went 3-for-3 in the nightcap. Ungru had a hit and drove in two runs in game two.

The Knights remain at home when Taylor University comes to Marian College Baseball Field on Tuesday afternoon. The twi-night doubleheader begins at 3:30 p.m., with the twinbill airing LIVE at www.marian.edu/athletics.
