Knights sweep Maple Leafs at home - 4/8/2009

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College baseball team snapped a four-game slide on Wednesday as it swept Goshen College, 13-1 in five innings and 6-5, in a Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader.

The Knights improved to 17-17 overall and 6-6 in MCC play.

After Goshen opened game one with a run in the top of the first, the Knights got hot at the plate and ran away from the Maple Leafs quickly.

The Knights posted six in the second in an inning that was capped off by a two-run single by freshman Evan Schludecker (Indianapolis/Roncalli). Junior Tony Goodpaster (Avon, Indiana/Wabash), freshman Jon Wade (Avon, Indiana/Avon), senior Chad Morris (Whitestown, Indiana/Vermont), and senior Kyle Cox (Indianapolis/Butler) each had RBI-singles in the inning.

They picked up right where they left off in the third as they posted a five-spot on Goshen to take an 11-1 lead.

Goodpaster led off the inning with a triple, sophomore Bobby Willis (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) was hit by a pitch, and Wade walked to load the bases with none out. Morris ripped a two-run single to start the scoring.

After an RBI-ground out by Cox, freshman James Storms (Camby, Indiana/Plainfield) capped the inning with a two-run single to give the Knights the 11-1 lead.

They added two more on a two-run home run by sophomore Cory Emmons (Indianapolis/Lutheran), and that was all freshman Ben Walters (Beech Grove, Indiana/Beech Grove) needed.

Walters threw a complete game, allowed one earned run, scattered four hits, and struck out six to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Morris led the way after he went 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Schludecker, Emmons, Cox, and Storms each drove in two runs for the Knights.

Game two looked as if it might turn out the same way as the Knights posted a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Schludecker drove in Morris with an RBI-single to stake the Knights the lead.

They posted two more on a two-run home run by Wade in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. However, Goshen was not about to go down without a fight in this game.

The Leafs scored two in the top of the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Knights responded on an RBI-single by freshman Jared Mills (Cicero, Indiana/Hamilton Heights) to take a 4-2 lead.

Goshen answered in the fourth to cut it back to one run, 4-3, but Cox gave the Knights some insurance with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score, 6-3.

The Leafs made it interesting as they finally got to junior Ricky Parrish (Avon, Indiana/Avon) and cut the lead to one, 6-5. However, sophomore Aaron Wilder (Decatur, Indiana/Bellmont) closed the door and earned his first save of the season in the 6-5 win.

Parrish moved to 4-4 on the season as he threw six innings, allowed four runs, and struck out five.

Wade and sophomore Todd Ungru (Madison, Indiana/Shawe Memorial) each had two hits. Wade and Cox each drove in two runs to lead the Knights.

The Knights hit the road on Thursday to take on Bethel College in Mishawaka, Indiana. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
