Knights suffer sweep to Huntington - 4/2/2009

INDIANAPOLIS - The Marian College baseball team suffered a sweep at the hands of Huntington University on Thursday evening. The Knights fell 10-1 in game one and 6-3 in game two.

They are now 15-15 on the season and 4-4 in Mid-Central College Conference play.

The Knights struggled to get anything going in game one as Huntington posted 10 runs from the second inning through the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.

Just when it looked as if the Knights were going to be no-hit by the Foresters, freshman Evan Schludecker (Indianapolis/Roncalli) broke up the no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Todd Ungru (Madison, Indiana/Shawe Memorial) ripped an RBI-double that scored Schludecker all the way from first to break up the shutout bid as well.

Game two was a tightly-contested affair for the first six innings as neither team seemed to want to win it. The Knights took the first lead in the bottom of the third as senior Chad Morris (Whitestown, Indiana/Vermont) scored before Schludecker was tagged out in a rundown to take a 1-0 lead.

Huntington scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead, but the Knights were ready for a rally.

After Ungru singled to right field, senior Kyle Cox (Indianapolis/Butler) hammered a first-pitch fastball over the right field wall for a two-run home run and a 3-2 lead. It was the first homer of the season for Cox.

The Knights were unable to hold the lead as the Foresters posted four runs in the top of the seventh to pick up the 6-3 win.

Ungru, Cox, and freshman Jared Mills (Cicero, Indiana/Hamilton Heights) each had one of the three hits for the Knights in game two.

The Knights head to Huntington on Saturday as they look to salvage a split in the four-game series. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
