INDIANAPOLIS - After sweeping the Grace College Lancers in Winona Lake, Indiana on Thursday, the Marian College baseball team made it a clean four-game series sweep as the Knights defeated Grace on Saturday, 10-8 and 8-2, at Marian College Baseball Field.
The wins pushed the Knights' record to 15-13 on the season and 4-2 in Mid-Central College Conference play.
The Knights fell behind in game one, 4-0, after they allowed four unearned runs in the top half of the first inning.
However, they answered with four of their own in the bottom half. Senior Chad Morris (Whitestown, Indiana/Vermont) opened the scoring as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch and senior Kyle Cox (Indianapolis/Butler) hit an RBI-sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-2.
Junior Tony Goodpaster (Avon, Indiana/Wabash) ripped a two-run double to left field to tie the score, 4-4, and put the Knights right back in the game.
They took the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the second as sophomore Bobby Willis (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) scored on as sophomore Todd Ungru (Madison, Indiana/Shawe Memorial) got caught in a run-down between first and second.
Grace broke out another four-run third inning to take an 8-5 lead and it looked like the Knights were in trouble. It turned out that they were fine as they posted three in the bottom of the third to tie the score, 8-8.
Goodpaster hit an RBI-single while freshman Jeff Marschand (Galveston, Indiana/Lewis Cass) and Goodpaster scored on an error to knot the score.
The scoring ended there for Grace as freshman Caleb Small (Arcadia, Indiana/Hamilton Heights) shut the Lancers down over the final four innings to pick up the victory.
The Knights finished off the Lancers in the bottom of the sixth as Ungru hit a two-run double to give the Knights the 10-8 win.
Goodpaster went 2-for-2 with three RBI to lead the Knights while Ungru finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Evan Schludecker (Indianapolis/Roncalli) and junior Mike Keltz (Avon, Indiana/Avon) each added two hits for the Knights.
Junior Patrick Midla (Brownsburg, Indiana/Bethesda Christian) was the story of game two as he threw a complete game, allowed two earned runs on four hits, and struck out eight to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Knights opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as freshman Jared Mills (Cicero, Indiana/Hamilton Heights) hit the team's second home run of the season. The two-run shot was Mills' first of his career and it gave the Knights a 2-0 lead.
After four scoreless innings, the Lancers broke through with a pair to tie the game in the top of the fifth. However, the Knights won the game with an six-run sixth inning.
Freshman James Storms (Camby, Indiana/Plainfield) hit a two-run single to get the scoring started and Willis hit an RBI-sacrifice fly to take a 5-2 lead. Ungru hit a two-run double to give the Knights a 7-2 lead and Cox hit an RBI-double to finish off the 8-1 win.
Storms and Mills each finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while Ungru went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Goodpaster also added two hits in the win.
The Knights remain at home on Tuesday when they host Indiana Tech at Marian College Baseball Field. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
