WINONA LAKE, Indiana - The Marian College baseball team looked to get back on the winning track on Thursday afternoon in a Mid-Central College Conference doubleheader at Grace College.
The Knights did just that as their pitching dominated in 2-0 and 1-0 victories to improve to 13-13 on the season and 2-2 in MCC play.
Freshman Neil Hackett (LaPorte, Indiana/LaPorte) was the story in game one as he cruised through the Lancers' lineup and carried a no-hitter through six-and-one-third innings. However, a single hit in the bottom of the seventh gave Hackett a complete game, one-hit shutout. He struck out seven and walked three to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Freshman Jared Mills (Cicero, Indiana/Hamilton Heights) led the Knights in game one after he went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Patrick Midla (Brownsburg, Indiana/Bethesda Christian) also had a hit and drove in a run for the Knights.
Game two was much of the same as a scoreless game needed extra innings to decide the pitcher's duel.
Junior Ricky Parrish (Avon, Indiana/Avon) threw a complete game, three-hit shutout as the Knights pushed the game-winning run across the plate in the top of the eighth inning.
Parrish, the reigning MCC Pitcher of the Week, allowed just the three hits, walked none, and struck out a season-high nine batters to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Parrish only needed one run and freshman Evan Schludecker (Indianapolis/Roncalli) drove in sophomore Bobby Willis (North Vernon, Indiana/Jennings County) with the game's only run to secure the 1-0 victory.
The Knights were held to just four hits in the second game after tallying six in game one.
Marian College and Grace College hook up again on Saturday when the Lancers come to Marian College Baseball Field. The twinbill is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
