St. Francis Hall renamed Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg Hall

by Mark Apple | Dec 23, 2013

Earlier this year, St. Francis Hall was renamed Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg Hall in honor of Marian University’s founders and current sponsor. When students return to campus for spring semester, the signage on campus will reflect the name change, labeling the facility as “Oldenburg Hall.”

“The renaming of St. Francis Hall to Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg Hall is a fitting tribute to Marian University’s founders,” Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener, said. “Without the Sisters’ vision and leadership, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Their influence will be forever felt in the Franciscan values that are ingrained in our culture and serve as the moral compass for our students, staff and faculty.”

The university chose not to change signage on campus immediately following the official name change, fearing that first-year freshmen – as well as returning students – might be confused if schedules reflected that a class was being held in St. Francis Hall, but campus signage identified the building as Oldenburg Hall.
