Mother Clarissa Dillhoff Award for Distinguished Achievement in Mentoring Presented to Doris Garland Downing '73
This award reflects the most important meaning of the word "mentor"--a person who is trusted to educate another. Mother Clarissa was a counselor and guide, and it was under her leadership that Marian University moved from Oldenburg to Indianapolis in 1937. Award recipients must be alumni of the university; demonstrate the spirit of mentoring by providing guidance, support, encouragement, and leadership to the university community, or to individual in the broader community; and contribute, through personal leadership, to the development and growth of the individual mentored.
At the 2016 Gala, Doris Garland Downing '73 was awarded this honor. Since graduating from Marian University with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1973, Doris Garland Downing has spent her career as a leader in education and it currently an adjunct faculty member and university supervisor for the Graduate Programs in Education at Marian University. For 35 years, she worked in the Indianapolis-area school systems as a teacher in the Indianapolis Public School system, assistant principal in Washington Township, and principal in Lawrence Township, where she was awarded the Indiana Four Star School award, State Blue Ribbon award, and the Principal's Lilly Grant. As a lifelong learner, Downing continued her education, receiving a master of science in elementary education from Indiana University, and is currently earning a doctor of education in education leadership from Indiana University. Additionally, she has been constantly giving back to Marian University by lending her talents in supporting student-athletes at study-tables and her time by managing the ticket office at football and basketball games. Her love for Marian University is evident in her continued commitment to the Knights.

Marian University’s Bookstore made gift giving easier this holiday season. Instead of choosing from pre-made products in store, customers now have the option of ordering custom products online. In the bookstore’s online custom clothing and gift shop, hundreds of products, such as sweatshirts and backpacks, can be customized with many different logos, as well as activity and graduation year.
This new option ensures that there is something for everyone, whether you are a soccer player that graduates next spring or you are an alumnus who participated in track years ago.
The campus bookstore will be open during Christmas break. To order your custom products, visit the online store. Custom orders can be shipped to the store for no extra charge. They can also be shipped anywhere else for a flat rate of $7.50.
