dcsimg Institute for Green and Sustainable Science

What is IGSS?

The Institute for Green and Sustainable Science (IGSS) is a research, education, and outreach center sponsored by and located on the campus of Marian University, Indianapolis. We engage in the study of sustainability issues, particularly in ecology, green chemistry, and energy science. IGSS is directed by Carl Lecher, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry and co-directed by Roderick Macrae, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry.

Summer Program

The IGSS summer program is a seven-week, research-based course taught by Marian University faculty that creates a collaborative environment where individual and collective efforts lead to the production of scholarly work within the field of sustainability.

Who can participate in the IGSS Summer Program?

Undergraduate science students
Students should be majoring in the life or physical sciences and have completed a minimum of one year of college chemistry. Students from surrounding institutions are strongly encouraged to apply.

High school science teachers
Central Indiana teachers in the life and physical sciences who want to add sustainability education to their curricula. Teachers from disadvantaged school systems are encouraged to apply. Middle school science teachers with degrees in the life and physical sciences will also be considered.

Roderick Macrae, Ph.D.

Dr. Roderick Macrae has a background in the chemistry of the light hydrogen isotope muonium, an unstable atom formed by implantation of positive muons into matter. Macrae still pursues both experimental and theoretical studies related to muon spin rotation and related experimental techniques.
