Credit for Prior Learning

Receive Credit for Prior Learning

Candidates in the Marian University Transition to Teaching program may receive transfer credit for courses that were taken at a regionally accredited institution. In order for a course credit to be granted, the course must be at the 100 level or higher and a minimum of a C must have been earned. Courses will be accepted based on a course-by-course evaluation by the program director.

In addition to the above, candidates have the right to request that coursework credit be granted based on evidence of prior learning and knowledge that may not appear on traditional transcripts. This may include exam results that can be used to demonstrate competency or detailed documentation of professional experience relative to course content.  Examples of exams that can be used to demonstrate competency are CLEP (College Level Examination Program), DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support), Marian University end of course exams, and  PRAXIS II.  Professional experience examples may include letters of reference from employers detailing experience related to the understanding of child psychology or behavior. Prior learning and knowledge evidence will be assessed and evaluated by the program director.

Examples of Prior Learning and Experience

Susie Student has taken several courses in Psychology and Human Development with a grade of C or better.  She will receive course credit for the Child Development and Observation course.

Nina Nurse is employed by anywhere school corporation.  She provides 3 excellent letters of reference that indicate evidence of her knowledge and years of experience in working with children. She will receive course credit for the Child Development and Observation course.

Joe Candidate takes Praxis II English Language, Literature, and Composition exam and achieves a score above the required score for state licensure. He is then deemed to hold sufficient knowledge for teaching the content and will need only pedagogy coursework.
