Standards for Teachers of Health and Physical Education

Standard 1a: The teacher understands the content areas of health education and the tools of inquiry and skills related to the development of a health literate person.

Standard 1b: The teacher understands the concept and content of physical education and the tools of inquiry related to the development of a physically educated person.

Standard 2: The teacher understands how individuals learn and develop and provides opportunities that support mental, physiological, social, emotional, and moral development.

Standard 3: The teacher plans and implements a variety of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies based upon the curriculum goals in order to develop learners’ critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills.

Standard 4: The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and multi-media communication techniques to foster inquiry, collaboration, and engagement in the learning process.

Standard 5: The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

Standard 6: The teacher understands how individuals differ in their approaches to learning and creates appropriate instruction adapted for diverse learners.

Standard 7: The teacher understands and uses formal, informal, and authentic assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the learner’s physical, mental, social, and emotional development.

Standard 8: The teacher is a reflective practitioner who seeks opportunities for professional growth and evaluates the effects of his/her actions on learners, parents/guardians, and other professionals.

Standard 9: The teacher fosters relationships with colleagues, parents/guardians, and community agencies to support the learners’ growth and well-being.

  • Successful completion of performance assessments through Phases 1, 2, and 3
  • Minimum of “C” in required courses in the major and licensing programs
  • 2.5 minimum GPA in the major, all licensing areas, and overall
