Phase I 

Phase 1 Assessment: Admission to the Teacher Education Program

The following abilities are judged for admission to the program:

  1. Communicates effectively in analysis of self and others
  2. Observes critically
  3. Identifies own values
  4. Articulates personal teaching philosophy
  5. Relates values to college and program mission
  6. Uses appropriate language and form
  7. Acts responsibly and professionally
  8. Takes charge of own learning
  1. For admission to the program, students must complete the following:
    1. A portfolio that presents evidence of successful completion of the following:
      • Cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall, and in the major and minor
      • Grades of C or better in ENG 101, ENG 115, and COM 101
      • Passing scores on all three sections of the PRAXIS I test
      • Completion of introductory field experiences required by the program with satisfactory evaluation by the mentoring teacher and the university instructor
      • Philosophy of Teaching statement
      • Sample reflective writing, using the School of Education's Reflective Protocol
      • Self-analysis, using the guidelines available in the School of Education office
      • Verification form
      • Minimum of C in all courses required by the major, minor and licensing areas

      This portfolio is rated by two members of the Teacher Education Committee

    2. An interview with the Teacher Education Committe

      This interview is rated by two members of the committee independently of each other.

    3. Completion of criminal history form and formal application
  2. Students who transfer into the School of Education from another program (internal or external to Marian University) must make an appointment with the Licensing Advisor to determine appropriate preparation for Phase 1 Assessment.

  3. Students not meeting admission criteria may petition the Teacher Education Committee.

  4. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program before enrollment in any 300 or 400 level EDU courses is approved.

  5. The School of Education does not accept educational methods courses that have been taken by correspondence.

  6. Testing Requirements for Phase 1 Assessment
    All students who wish to enter the Teacher Education Program must successfully complete the PRAXIS 1 test in mathematics, reading, and writing. Students must meet the minimum scores of

    PRAXIS 1
    Math 175
    Reading 176
    Writing 172

    The Sylvan Learning Centers offer the computer-based version of the PPST. The department office and the Learning and Counseling Center have test preparation resources for the PPST. Students may also go to the ETS website at www.ets.org for additional information.
