Teacher As Model and Mentor:
Ever Teaching, Ever Learning, Ever Changing
This theme of the School of Education at Marian University provides the foundation for learning to teach. One of the wonderful things about the teaching profession is that it allows a teacher to improve continuously, to grow and become better each day, each week, each month, each year. It is a profession of constant renewal based on the needs of children who attend the schools.
One of the largest schools on the campus, it offers many programs (see our main page for a complete list). In addition to our traditional teacher preparation programs, the school provides licensing only programs in K-6 licensing and 9-12 licensing for individuals who have baccalaureate degrees. Each potential student’s transcript is reviewed to ascertain how well the previous degree matches expectations for content knowledge. Students who participate in a license-only version of a program must still meet all performance expectations in the phase assessment program.
The school also provides a specialized course of study for students committed to faith-based teaching, particularly in Catholic schools. The course of study parallels the regular programs, but provides Catholic school experience at a more intense level. Students also take specialized courses in theology to support their commitment to Catholic school teaching.
Seven full-time and one part-time faculty provide expertise in a variety of areas: Science, Mathematics, Reading and Language Arts, Social Studies, Classroom Management and Student Behavior, Multicultural Education, English as a New Language, Technology, Teacher Research, and Early Childhood Education. Students in the high school program have intensive practical experiences with teachers in local area high schools. MAT students work intensively with mentors in assigned schools. Students in the Catholic School Educator Program work closely with mentors who exemplify the best of faith-based teaching.
The School of Education is committed to providing an excellent preparation in teacher education that allows graduates to provide transformative learning experiences. Each program builds on a foundation that emphasizes the diversity of children, diversity of learning, diversity of teaching, diversity of parents, and diversity of the schools. Each program provides a sequence of courses that balance theory and practice in classrooms. Students engage in increasingly independent learning and practice throughout their program until they are ready for the student teaching experience.
