Catholic School Educator Program 

Do you want to teach in Catholic schools? Are you interested in helping children develop spiritually?

College students committed to faith-based teaching have the opportunity to nurture their own faith as they study to become teachers. The Catholic School Educator Preparation Program parallels the traditional education program while emphasizing the faith-based teacher’s role in helping children develop their spiritual lives.

School of Education Program Expectations
The Marian University Catholic School Educator Preparation Program is based on 11 program principles. These include the following expectations:

  • knowledge of subject matter 
  • knowledge of child development 
  • cultural competence 
  • good instructional and assessment practice based on differentiation 
  • curriculum development and planning 
  • positive classroom environment 
  • strong collaborative skills 
  • reflective practice 
  • value and respect for children, parents, and colleagues 
  • ability to work with diverse communities 
  • a moral commitment to children and their parents

Theology Component
Completing this program leads to a concentration in faith-based teaching. Students complete an additional 10 hours of coursework in theology. Their coursework focuses on:

  • creed of the Church 
  • liturgy of the Church 
  • sacraments of the Church 
  • moral response 
  • Old Testament 
  • New Testament 
  • the person of Jesus Christ 
  • praying with children 
  • catechism of the Catholic Church 
  • teaching of religion 
  • mission and history of Catholic schools

Students complete a one-hour practicum as part of a methods course in teaching religion.
