Phase II Assessment: Qualifying to Student Teach
The following abilities are judged for successful completion of Phase II:
- Applies understanding of child development to planning instruction
- Demonstrates understanding of essential content knowledge
- Adapts instruction for diverse learners
- Uses formative and summative assessments of children and their learning
- Defines and analyzes problems in teaching
- Develops a variety of strategies for student learning based on best practices, utilizing current resources
- Uses technology to plan and implement lessons
- Relates personal teaching philosophy to decision-making
- Creates learning experiences that demonstrate understanding of content knowledge
- Communicates effectively considering context and audience
Teacher candidates are assessed in Phase 2 as part of their course work. For Elementary Education majors and Exceptional Needs minors, this includes final grades and performance assessments from methods courses, allowing input from a variety of faculty members. For Secondary and Middle School licensing candidates, a portfolio is required in EDU 454 and/or EDU 455, respectively; two faculty members review the portfolio to ensure reliability.
