Hazardous Material Spill
Notification Campus-wide voice mail or, if the situation is urgent, messengers with bullhorns.
Who to Call Campus police at extension 6789.

What to Do:

On Campus

  1. Notify campus police at extension 6789 and provide the following information:

    • building name

    • room number or location

    • type of incident

    • name of material or description if odor involved

    • estimate of volume of material involved.

  2. If material contacts your skin, immediately flush the affected area with copious amounts of water   for at least 15 minutes, then seek medical attention.  Remove and discard contaminated clothing and shoes.  This should take place while someone else makes the appropriate phone calls in a safe location.

  3. Do not attempt to clean up the spill yourself but do extinguish any naked flame or fire hazard.

  4. Evacuate the immediate area, avoid the area of the spill, and close doors behind you.  If you are outside, move upwind of the spill.

Off Campus

  1. Spill on I-65 or surrounding areas: do not leave campus or until the authorities have given campus evacuation procedures.

  2. If you see signs of exposure to chemicals (choking, tearing), move upwind of the area.
