Communication

Communication is the study of creating messages and interpreting meanings. The communication curriculum at Marian University emphasizes the intersection of rhetoric, culture, and ethics. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. It includes practical training in speech communication skills such as public speaking, discussion, and debate.

We also encounter persuasion in our media-saturated culture. Advertisements, TV, Film, and new media shape the meanings we produce and consume. Students in communication exercise their minds and voices in order to address a wide range of ethical questions concerning religion and politics, diversity and democracy, justice and consumer culture—and all aspects of life in community.
