Policies and Procedures

Advising

Faculty members provide ongoing advising to all students in the Elementary and Secondary Education programs. Secondary licensing students are also advised by faculty in their content major as well as faculty in the School of Education.

Appeal Procedure

Students who are denied a pass on a phase assessment may request a hearing through the following appeals procedure:

  1. The student should write a letter to the Teacher Education Committee requesting a hearing and giving reasons for the request. Dr. Susie Beesley is chair of the Teacher Education Committee.
  2. The student should attend the hearing to seek an exemption from the committee.
  3. The committee will review the request.
  4. If the request is denied, the student may petition the faculty Academic Policies Committee to review the case. A written request for a hearing should be submitted to the faculty Academic Policies Committee within the same semester of the denial.
  5. The Academic Policies Committee will hear both sides of the case and determine one of the following:
            a. to uphold the decision of the Teacher Education Committee
            b. to send the case back to the Teacher Education Committee for re-evaluation

Attendance

Attendance and active participation in all scheduled classes are expected. Every absence deprives the absent student, those students who are present, and the faculty member of a richer educational experience.

Each faculty member, with prior appropriate school review, has the right to establish and enforce his or her own attendance policy. Such a policy must be clearly stated in the syllabus including how different kinds of absences will be treated or tolerated, as well as the full range of and specific sanctions which the faculty member employs.

Documentation of Dispositions

Part of standards-based licensing includes providing evidence of positive attitudes and dispositions within course and practicum performance. Students are evaluated in Phase I Assessment regarding their dispositions in early field experiences and coursework. All professors in the university have the ability to document positive and negative statements regarding students' performance in their classes throughout the program. If a professor decides to document a student for that student's School of Education file, the school will provide a copy of that documentation to the student. Students may write responses to negative documentation to be placed in their permanent files.

Exemptions

Occasionally, students bring extensive and rich experience in schools with them to a preparation program. The school will review requests for exemptions from courses. Students should work with their academic advisors or the licensing advisor, Dr. Chris Grissom, regarding the evidence needed for an exemption to be made. Dr. Grissom will provide final approval for all exemptions.

Grades

Students must receive at least a C in all required courses for the major or teaching license. Students must maintain a 2.50 GPA in the major, all licensing areas, and overall to remain active in the program.

Insurance

All students must have health and medical insurance. If a student is injured while participating in a local agency or school, the school and university are not held liable for medical costs. If a student does not have medical/health insurance through family or work, the university can provide it through the registration process.

Licensing Only Students

Teacher candidates who are licensing only must complete PRAXIS I tests during their first semester at Marian. They should apply for Phase I Assessment during their second semester at Marian University. Secondary licensing teacher candidates must also successfully complete the applicable PRAXIS II content area test before student teaching.

Criminal History Check

Students must have current criminal history checks in order to be placed in schools for practicums and student teaching. Contact Pat Stewart for information regarding the process.

Phase Assessment Process

All candidates must complete the phase assessment process successfully in order to be recommended for licensing. This process is a performance-based process that is closely tied to methods and performance classes in the respective programs.

Student Files

Student files are the property of the School of Education. However, students are free to review their files at any time and have items copied for which they have not waived their viewing rights. Students must request copies from Pat Stewart and may not take the files from the office.

Clinical Internships

No student will be placed for clinical internship who has not met the Phase I and Phase II requirements. All methods and content courses must be completed prior to clinical internship.
