On Tuesday, November 27, the School of Mathematics and Sciences will have a Chartering Ceremony for the induction of Marian University students into the Gamma Eta Chapter of Sigma Zeta, a National Science and Mathematics Honor Society.   Posted by Robin
Marian University’s School of Mathematics and Sciences’ application for a chapter of Sigma Zeta, a National Science and Mathematics Honor Society was approved on Friday, October 19, 2012. Marian University is now the 62nd member of the society and will host the Gamma Eta Chapter of Sigma Zeta. This is the first time in the history of Marian University we’ve been a member of a National Science and Mathematics Honor Society. The reasons for applying to bring a chapter of Sigma Zeta to Marian University are threefold: first, it will provide a unique opportunity for our undergraduates to not only receive scholarships to fund research, but it will also provide a national venue for the presentation of their research; second, membership in a nationally recognized honor society will provide our students with a truly significant addition to their portfolios when applying to graduate and/or professional schools; and third, membership in Sigma Zeta will provide an opportunity for elevating the visibility of our students’ academic and extracurricular achievements.   On Tuesday, November 27, 2012, from 7-8 p.m. in the Marian University Theatre, Dr. Joe Burnell, Sigma Zeta’s national president, will be present to conduct the Chartering Ceremony for the induction of our students into the Gamma Eta Chapter. This is a one-time event and a true honor for our students. Dr. Loren Bertocci, dean of the School Mathematics and Sciences, will speak about the state of mathematics and sciences at Marian University and what the future holds for our graduates. President Daniel J. Elsener will also be in attendance to provide a welcome to our students’ friends and families. A reception will follow the Chartering Ceremony in the theater’s second-floor reception area. The students and faculty of the School of Mathematics and Sciences are looking forward to celebrating this momentous occasion.
